We can’t ignore the importance of good wound care. Complicated wounds, especially those managed poorly, can develop into chronic wounds. Wound treatment should tailor to patient needs to promote healthy healing and avoid problems.

Wound Care is vital for all wounds, including cuts, burns, lacerations and scarring. Wounds connected to underlying medical conditions require chronic and proper care to ensure proper healing and prevent infections and inflammation from occurring and spreading.

Illnesses such as diabetes are strongly linked to as ulcers and cuts on the extremities of patients, and commonly cause chronic and septic wounds such as gangrene.

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of foot inflammation because of disruption of blood circulation and unmaintained blood glucose levels. A wound or infection that is no concern for the average person can lead to severe complications and spread rapidly in those living with diabetes.

How your body reacts to Diabetes Mellitus:

  • Reduction in the body’s ability to heal wounds independently;
  • Lack of precipitation leads to dry skin, causing the legs and feet to crack;
  • Sugar deposits cause a sensory blocking in the nerves leaving wounds, cracks and scars unnoticed by the patient;
  • Wounds and ulcers are easily irritated, and this will lead to more extensive wounds and tissue death. Hou hierdie uit asb vir nou ek wag vir Jacques

Underlying complex conditions prevent wounds from healing properly and may exacerbate the issue over time. When left untreated or wrongly treated for too long, chronic wounds are at risk of infection, amputation, and other complications.

Early interventions and appropriate wound care and treatment of ulcers is key to avoiding further complications and irritation to the wounds. We recommend a holistic treatment that considers treatment and wound management along with prevention which includes effective use of compressions stockings/hosiery and/or diabetic footwear options.
